cant wait for the prequel, THE EMPTY TARGET BUILDING THAT GOT REPURPOSED BY SPIRIT HALLOWEEN. also props to this movie for having one of the best off the cuff jokes i have seen in a while.
Looking for a good fright for Halloween (I always am), five friends set off on a road trip to discover the scariest underground haunts. As their trip seems to have reached a dead-end, strange things start to happen and it becomes clear that the haunt has come to them. the concept of cruising around with your friends trying to find the best haunted house around sounds like a dream come true, and the found footage style and acting really makes this movie feel believable. i could never really get into the HELL HOUSE movies, but this movie instantly had my attention. shows ya just how important strong characters are.
even with the strength of its characters, the first hour of this movie is reeeeeeeaaaaaaaal sloooooooow. it does a perfect job of establishing this as possible found footage, but most footage you randomly stumble upon wont be terribly interesting. its full of great character bits that help flesh out the cast, but the charm wears out as the wait for something to happen grows longer and longer. the entire movie is suggesting that you have no idea whats real and whats fake when you go though a haunted house, but even the characters in the movie admit that idea doesn't bother them. the best part of ignorance is the bliss after all, so what in this movie is actually scary? well.... um....
right around the 55 minute mark, we get our first scene that cant be easily explained away as part of a haunt. from here on out things more an more interesting as the hunt for the blue skeleton starts. it almost like the first hour is totally unnecessary to enjoy the rest of the movie, and really this whole movie could about 45 minutes shorter.
my advice would be to skip the first 30-45 minutes, and what you have left is a decent Halloween movie. the scariest part? you will never get those 45 minutes
