YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN

i have been watching a lot of bad movies, so i really needed a win. and considering this movie grossed $86.2 million on a $2.78 million budget, ranks No. 28 on Total Film magazine's readers' "List of the 50 Greatest Comedy Films of All Time", No. 56 on Bravo's list of the "100 Funniest Movies", No. 13 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 funniest American movies, and it was even selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry. so needless to say i knew i would enjoy this movie.

Respected medical lecturer Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) learns that he has inherited his infamous grandfather's estate in Transylvania. Arriving at the castle, Dr. Frankenstein soon begins to recreate his grandfather's experiments with the help of servants Igor (Marty Feldman), Inga, and the fearsome Frau Blücher. After he creates his own monster (Peter Boyle), new complications ensue with the arrival of the doctor's fiance, Elizabeth.

before we talk about this movies plot and why it works as well as it does, i cant go another second with mentioning how gorgeous this movie is. James Whale would be in tears at how faithfully and beautifully the were able to recreate the classic black and white Gothic horror setting. every second of this movie is beautiful, and full props to the set designers and Mel Brooks for making this movie so gosh dang pretty.

plot wise you may be expecting the classic Mel Brooks nonstop stream of jokes, but this movie is surprisingly restrained. this movie isn't tying to be a SCARY MOVIE style parody, and i'm a big fan of how this movie is mainly focused on its plot while still getting a lot of perfectly Mel Brooks jokes in. the best part about this movie is how many members of this cast are both comedic experts, and even better actors. this movie is perfect at being serious when it wants to be, and shit your pants hilarious when it wants to be.

how does one describe why there favorite food is there favorite? can any poet, however talented, describe perfectly the overwhelming bliss of love? can a soon to be stoned 21 year old, no matter how talented, explain what makes one of the greatest comedy films of all time so effective?

maybe, but this one cant. i cant recommend you watch this movie enough, as this is easily the best movie i have seen in 2022
