THANKSGIVING

"Thanksgiving is less a movie than a messy attempt to coast off an oldie-but-goodie one-off without adding anything to the party. It can 100 percent go stuff itself."

It's worth noting before we start that Black Friday-related incidents resulting in deaths and injuries are not just a myth. In the last 12 years, there has been an average of 44 separate Black Friday incidents resulting in 11 deaths and 108 injuries in the United States. In 2008, the first Black Friday death was recorded in Long Island when a Walmart employee was trampled to death after some 2,000 shoppers rushed the doors.

So that's... Anyways...

Thanksgiving is a 2023 American slasher film directed by Eli Roth and written by Jeff Rendell, based on a story by the pair, who produced with Roger Birnbaum. Based on Roth's fictitious trailer of the same name from Grindhouse (2007), it is the third feature-length adaptation of a fictitious Grindhouse trailer after Robert Rodriguez's Machete (2010) and Jason Eisener's Hobo with a Shotgun (2011). The film stars Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Nell Verlaque, Rick Hoffman, and Gina Gershon. After a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth Massachusetts. That's pretty much it, real bare bones plot-wise with this one.

This movie is trying to be a SCREAM / I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER style who done it with modern young characters, but it overdoes the young and modern thing way too much for me to get into it. The opening of this movie very quickly Establishes Eli Roth's bizarre sense of Boston humour, in a way that's so completely ridiculous It's hard to take the serious horror elements that follow seriously.

I really wish instead of jarringly bouncing between serious character drama and goofy self-aware slasher, I wish this movie would just commit to a goofier tone. the Boston accents that occasionally disappear, the Medicare actor from the main cast, the ridiculous over the top kills, would all be perfect for a black comedy.

But this movies insists on having complicated character backstories and mystery thriller elements, that aren't effective or interesting in the slightest. The end product leaves me wondering exactly who this movie is supposed to be for, and who exactly is laughing at all these jokes.

I'm not sure why I was excited for this one. Maybe that's my fault.
