THE BLAIR WITCH documentary Heather was making was perfectly small scale and creepy. This movie's documentary would probably do as well as a 3rd ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE if they managed to finish making it.
Before I talk about the actual movie, I want to chat a bit about the director Renny Harlin. His best-known films include A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Deep Blue Sea. Born on 15 March 1959 as Renny Lauri Mauritz Harjola, he is the most successful Finnish film director in the history of Hollywood. Even so, the guy has 5 Razzie nominations for worst director at the Razzies.
Hard not to keep that in mind as I watched this movie.
Devil's Pass (originally titled The Dyatlov Pass Incident) is a 2013 horror film directed by Renny Harlin, written by Vikram Weet, and starring Holly Goss, Matt Stokoe, Luke Albright, Ryan Hawley, and Gemma Atkinson. Americans who investigate the Dyatlov Pass incident. At the University of Oregon, the student Holly King is awarded for her research about the fate of nine Russian hikers known as The Dyatlov Pass Incident who mysteriously died in the Ural Mountains in Russia in 1959. She decides to make a movie following the steps of Dyatlov and his team and she invites the filmmaker Jenson Day; the audio technician Denise Evers; and the experienced guides JP Hauser Jr. and Andy Thatcher. They travel to Russia expecting to find the truth about the mystery, but they find death instead.
in a good found-footage movie, nobody acts like an actor and everything feels real. Throughout most of this movie, everyone feels like an actor and nothing feels like it's actually happening. out of the main cast and crew for this fake documentary, there isn't a single interesting or likeable character to be found. I imagine most people who are interested in watching this movie already know the story of Dylatov Pass, which results in a lot of pointless history lessons as the movie spends most of its opening explaining what you already know. Might work with stronger characters, but it results in a movie that starts very meandering and uninteresting.
But don't worry dear reader! after an assault of pointless camping trip antics, this movie rewards your patience with... um... a time portal that turns you into a monster if you do it wrong.
If you want to dig into the creepy true story behind this movie, Do yourself a favour, and watch a real documentary instead of this movie.
