Apparently I have to say the year this movie came out, as technically it is a part of a trilogy. got to love when remakes use the exact same name as the original, and thus permanently date themselves by having the year become a part of the title.
Willard, a social misfit, is stuck between taking care of his abusive mother and a cruel boss. When he realizes his unusual connection with rats, he decides to use them to his advantage.
I was curious to watch this movie for two reasons. the first is that i am a big fan of Crispin Glover's wacky film career, and the second is this movie promises to be full of adorable rats. if you wanted to watch this movie for the same reasons, then you will probably love this movie.
before he even opened his mouth, its obvious this is the role Crispin was born to play. As with all of the strong and silent types, he is full of small mannerisms and facial expressions that show you more about his character than any dialogue ever could. he is and has always been one hell of an actor, and this is easily him at his prime. not only that, we the most laid back performance i have seen from R. Lee Ermey. he off course is the same type of military style asshole he always plays, but the character will never get old for me. and of course if we are talking about this movies great characters, we simply have to talk about the rats. my two favorite characters in this movie by far are Ben and Socrates. despite both being rats, they both have a lot of unique personality, and i cant help but cheer whenever they are on screen.
right of the bat, this movie establishes a great Tim burton style atmosphere with its Danny Elfman style score, and the atmosphere of this movie is set in feels straight out of Sweeny Todd. its full of darkness and murder, but it never feels really frightening or hopeless. essentially, this movie is a dark fairy tale. instead of the pied piper luring children, we get Willard unleashing his hoards of rats on the people who have pissed him off.
honestly, its hard to talk about this movie without having a fanboy freak out. in the simplest terms possible, i fucking love this movie. a lot. its a perfect mix of dark comedy and character study, and did i mention yet the cute ass ratty bois? i cant stress enough how cute the rats are in this movie.
