WICKER MAN (1973)

is this what people did before TV? sing at the bar and have cemetery orgies? at least we have penis school to keep the kids busy.

Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) arrives on the small Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the report of a missing child. A conservative Christian, the policeman observes the residents' frivolous sexual displays and strange pagan rituals. The more Sergeant Howie learns about the islanders' strange practices, the closer he gets to tracking down the missing child.

i love the way this movie instantly creates the perfect unsettling atmosphere by doing fairly little. it starts with a typical church service, then the opening credits play over aerial shots of our leading man arriving at the island. its a fairly simple opening that sounds very mundane, but this movie knows how to use silence and its folksy score to manipulate how you feel while watching. the camera does a great job of subtly (kinda) bringing small details to your attention. a painted eye on a row boat, a sun shaped flag, an islanders concealed reaction, and all of it effectively makes you question everything

this movie makes an excellent point that (in my limited experience) no devoutly religious person wants to hear; there is no obligation for everyone else to be equally devoted to your god. there are hundreds of gods, and they all have the same right you do to practice there religion. seems like common sense to me, but unfortunately its a point that still needs to be made. so maybe cool it with calling everything sacrilegious.

speaking of questioning this movie, here's one of my biggest questions; whats this movie trying to say about sexuality? its clearly a fuck you to the idea of waiting until marriage, but whats the overall message? chill out and bang more? i'm sure different people have different takes on the role of sex in this movie, so i will leave that conversation for those less confused on the subject.

encase you couldn't tell by how much i have enjoyed writing about this movie, i loved watching this movie even more.

even if there are zero bees to be seen.

10/10
