When i went to see NEW MUTANTS in theatres with my cousin, we were both praying for there to be a lesbian subplot. most of the movie we were waiting for the kiss, and when it finally happened we quite literally cheered. this movie was the complete opposite experience. this movie focuses on queer characters without any sort of fanfare or stereotypes, and once again i cheered.
(brief side note here, every movie i have ever seen about queer people ends up being horribly sad. Broke-back Mountain, Call Me By Your Name, I love you Philip Morris, etc. can we get a movie about some happy gay couple having a nice summer in Italy with no major conflict? or is that porn...)
as far as the actual plot, this is not what i was expecting. the first 30 minutes are entirely establishing character. you get kind of bored in fact. you start, idk writing a blog and then bam. extremely suddenly, and very violently, shit hits the fan. all of the sudden tiny little white girl becomes Patrick Bateman and Man tracker at the same time.
The Most Dangerous Game plot is pretty basic, but this movies manages to keep things moving and interesting. Lots of well done action, stunts, and tension all through out.
the boring first 30 minutes now seem less boring.
