just so you know, the reason the mom character in this movie looks so familiar is because she played adult Beverly in the original IT miniseries. i swear i spent most of this movie trying to figure out why she was so familiar.
Shudder original kind of feels like Netflix original. Sometimes you get something amazing like THE DISCOVERY, and sometimes you get BIRD BOX. thankfully, this movie has a lot more in common with THE DISCOVERY.
Instantly, I was hooked on this movie. basically, this movie is about a man offers a reward to anyone who can prove there is an afterlife. He embarks on an adventure through Los Angeles to meet with three viable candidates, and he has no idea he is about to experience an unthinkable nightmare. our main character is immediately compelling, and I love how this movie isn't here to hold your hand. its a great example of showing versus telling, and this entire movie had me glued to the screen. not only does this movie have an amazing mystery with its search for the afterlife, but the main character himself is just as full of mystery.
there plenty to be said for horror movies that use jump scares, but this movie is more interested in making you tense. instead of assaulting you with ghostly jump scares, this movies sense of dread comes from having no idea if this person actually can connect with the afterlife or if its all a scam. its a film that knows exactly how to make you tense, and keeps you in the fetal position for a lot of its run time. the best comparison to this movie is the UK flick GHOST STORIES. both movies involve the main character sent to talk to 3 different people, and each person has a unique style of horror during there segments.
its a long movie that never over stays its welcome, and is full of awesome character moments and spooks galore. in short, this movie rules.
