I have been chasing a good ghost movie high after THE DARK AND THE WICKED blew me away. And i'm glad to say that itch has finally been scratched.
For now.
ghosts have a pretty basic routine. Start small, knock some shit over, then get more and more violent. that was my main issue with ghost stories, they aren't terribly violent so they dont seem terribly scary. That being said, the ghosts in this movie are both violent and scary.
This movie makes the basics feel new, and the whole movie is beautifully shot and directed. Even when nothing is happening, the directing is damn near perfect. And i absolutely love seeing Barbra Crampton in a serious role like this one. She is perfect as scared guilt ridden housewife, and its nerving to watch her husband slowly lose his mind.
and that action movie with intense gore final act is my favorite part of this whole movie. this movie goes from quiet and tense to balls to the wall intense and the change of pace is bad ass.
Im not sure if i said this about THE DARK AND THE WICKED, but it feels like an A24 Amityville Horror with a killer Tom Savini splat-tastic ending.
1000/10
