TITANE

i have been wanting to watch this movie since Titane had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received the Palme d'Or. Not only that, but it has Garance Marillier of RAW fame playing a character with the same name, and who doesn't love a good nasty as fuck horny body horror movie?

Titane is a 2021 body horror drama film written and directed by Julia Ducournau. Ever since that horrible car crash that nearly claimed her life, Alexia has been living with a high-purity, medical-grade titanium alloy implant firmly fixed to her skull. But, almost ten years later, instead of being put off by cars after her extensive cranioplasty, Alexia, now a silently violent go-go dancer at underground automotive shows, has developed a fetishistic fascination for cars. In the meantime, as a spate of grisly homicides terrorizes the city, the distraught father, fire chief Vincent, unexpectedly reunites with his long-lost son, Adrien, who has been missing for a decade. However, time changes people. Who is the bruised, taciturn stranger who demands a place in tender Vincent's heart?

Normally with movies like this one, your slowly watching a character sink into the depths or whatever trouble they have gotten themselves into. This movie is similar, but the pacing is cranked up to 11. When we start this movie Alexia is already a full blown serial killer with a decent kill count, who just so happens to only get horny for cars or metal. Which isn't to big of a problem, unless a car gets you pregnant and motor oil begins secreting from your vagina. This movie really feels like two movies stapled together, and this first movie is violent as fuck, horny as fuck, and in general just a damn good time. there are quite a few laughs to be had, stellar music on the soundtrack, and countless moments of damn near unbearable cringe worthy gore. Its a great character study on a blossoming young serial killer and metal fetishist, the this movie heads into act two.

David Cronenberg once said about the character of SPIDER that he was falling together instead of falling apart, and that is very much the case with TITANE. the first part of this movie is one massive downhill spiral, and this second half is more so a character study of Vincent the Fire fighter. Does he know that this person is not his son? what lead to his son leaving in the first place? Why is there such a nasty sexual tension in some of there scenes together? How does the mother fit into all of this? The gorgeous directing leaves quite a lot to the imagination in the best way possible, and its fun as hell to speculate exactly what happened and why.

What's far less fun is watching the development of this nasty ass metal baby, and how it is literally tearing her up. There is quite literally something black inside of her that is growing everyday (Wonder if that's a metaphor for something...), and it looks and sounds painful as fuck. the incredible sound design is largely why this movie is so hard to watch, and the crazy body horror effects will keep you from sleeping for a good long while.

This is unquestionably a movie you need to see more than once to fully understand what its going for. the plot anyone can pickup on the first watch, but the deeper meaning of it all is a lot more slippery.

10/10
