THE VOID

for a movie called the void, they sure dont call it the void very often. the abyss, the cosmic expanse, juts call it the void at least once please.

The void is a love letter to practical gore, and science fiction. this movie is a real throw back to movies like hellrasier and the thing, and this movie oozes with amazing practical effects. I know i rant a lot about how much i love practical gore, and this movie is an amazing example of how realistic practical effects can really take a good horror movie and make it one of my favorite movies ever made. within the first 5 minutes of this movie, we get a women stabbing a man in the eyes with scissors, which she has already used to cut her own face off. this movie dose not waste you're time.

the movie immediately begins with with intense action and mayhem, and there are very few breaks from the total carnage. its not just the carnage that makes this one of my favorite movies, its also the science fiction elements. the alien/mutant/whatever they are look incredibly. one of the upsides of doing things practically is you can cover things with blood, slime, and guts. and this movie uses all of those to make the creature extra gross and wonderful.

the cult members all look amazing, and the brief glimpses we get into the void are super well shot and creepy. the color pallet of this movie is largely blue and red, and one of my favorite shots in this movie shows a horde of cult members lit up in white robes by a police car. the blue alien like color pallet mixed with the deep red light sin the morgue both worth extremely well as setting the tone.

oh shit and i have to talk about that basement/morgue scenes. the scenes in the basement are incredible. i dont really believe in hell (because believing in hell to scary), but if i did it would be exactly like that. deformed being who only want death, but are forced to suffer in the dark. this is perfectly captured by the creature who constantly slams his head into a pipe in the wall. he has been doing this so long his head is just a mound of flesh, with a large hole in the middle where the pipe has been rammed through over and over again. spooky shit yall.

alright i have ranted about how great this movie is for long enough. if your not convinced, i cant help you. this movie fucking rules.

10/10
