This movie might be the first from its time to scare me. what else what you expect from a movie about how god has abandoned us. actually this movie tries to be about everything at some point in time.
at first glance this may appear to be a pretty basic old movie about a Knight who has just returned from the crusades in the middle of the black plague. its a bit hard to follow at times, and a decent argument could be made that this movie doesn't have much of a plot. Our leading Knight sort of just wanders from town to town, and talks to various people in the world. but in him exploring the worlds we get the majority of this films themes. its a dark look at the feeling of hopelessness in the black plague.
this movie is nothing but that good old fashion Swedish Nihilism / Existentialism that I have always enjoyed reading about. and like any good movie, it gives you a lot to think about. What if your 10 year mission was totally meaningless? How did the devoutly religious rationalize the black plague? Is death worth all of the fear we give it? Is death inevitable?
if all of that wasn't enough to make you curious, the whole movie is beautifully shot.
so check it out to be confronted by the inescapable reality of death. what fun!
8/10
