THE LIGHTHOUSE

Updated: Sep 15, 2020

I feel like I'm living in this movie right now. I am currently living in a apartment with the view of the ocean and a lighthouse. thanks to the Wildfire smoke from Oregon and everywhere else in the world that's on fire right now, the amount of smoke makes everything look sory of black and white. Not only dose the look match, buth the lighthouse is using its foghorn all day and all night.

There has never been a better time to watch this movie. The first time I watched this movie I was confused. I didn't get what was real, what was a hallucination, and how the fuck this movie ended. I loved the acting, the directing is incredible, but I had no clue what happened.

So I watched a very helpful youtube video from foundflix and I feel like I can finally enjoy this movie without the confusion.

This movie I can easily be described as beautiful. The entire film is in black and white, and is shown in almost reverse widescreen. The use if light, setting, and acting really make this feel like it was shot in another time. Robert Pattinson is an excellent leading man. He immediately appears to be a little manic, and like he is trying to run away from something. When he dose finally snap, he really seems to deranged and frightening.

And you can't spell deranged and frightening without Willem Dafoe. His crazy old man character with a strange obsession over the light is amazing. His acceptance can be a little hard to understand, but he knows how to get his point across. Both of these characters seem unhinged before the movie even starts, which makes you already fear seeing one of these 2 characters snap first.

(And that "you've been neglecting your duties, lad" scene makes me so mad. William Dafoe really expertly captured my mom in this Oscar worthy scene.)

I would have

And that's really what this movie is for the first half. Who going to push who over the edge first. It's a slowly building tense movie with a great pay off that really benefits from rewatches.

10/10
