seriously how the hell does this Wario looking ass hat make every woman he meets swoon. my man is rocking a bowl cut with the facial hair of a child molester.
A lot of movies falsely claim to be based on a true story, but this movie actually is. The Loudun possessions, known in French as the Possessed of Loudun Affair, was a notorious Witchcraft trial that took place in Loudun, Kingdom of France, in 1634. A convent of Ursuline nuns said they had been visited and possessed by demons. Following an investigation by the Catholic Church, a local priest named Urbain Grandier was accused of summoning the evil spirits. He was eventually convicted of the crimes of sorcery and burned at the stake. so guess what this movie is about...
In 17th-century France, Father Grandier (Oliver Reed) is a priest whose unorthodox views on sex and religion influence a passionate following of nuns, including the sexually obsessed Sister Jeanne. When the power-hungry Cardinal Richelieu realizes he must eliminate Grandier to gain control of France, Richelieu portrays Grandier as a Satanist and spearheads a public outcry to destroy the once-loved priest's reputation.
the history of this movie is 10 times longer than the movie, so of course i cant give you a full picture. but i simply have to mention this little fun fact to prep you for this movie. Film historian Joel W. Finler described The Devils as Russell's "most brilliant cinematic achievement, but widely regarded as his most distasteful and offensive work.". In 2014, Guillermo del Toro publicly criticized Warner Bros for censoring the film and limiting its availability. this film has been the endless victim of censorship and misunderstanding, so lets see exactly what this movie did to get the churches panties in such a twist.
i was expecting this movie to be over the top with its nudity, but nothing about this movie feels over the top. there is PG-13 levels of violence, and the only possible problem people could have with this movie is its themes. who decides what is moral? what happens when church and state fully combine? what makes you a sinner in this society? definitely subjects that would make a power hungry priest squirm, and that's just the beginning. the whole movie is about a small group of people fighting for power in the most misguided and malevolent way possible. the film is a damnation of these kinds of people, and i have a hard time understanding why this movie would be so heavily censored.
but if your a stone dead cave man with no interest in themes or morality, this movie may be boring to you. all of the acting is top notch, but if the boobs do nothing for you its a bit slow.
TLDR its good
7/10
