Watching THE DESCENT at a very early age gave me a life long case of the nopes when it comes to spelunking tight caves, and the only bigger nope i can possibly think of is cave diving. A report in the International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education stated that about 10 cave divers a year die on average. That may not seem like a high fatality rate, but there are there are only a few thousand cave divers in the world. mix that claustrophobic ass setup with a haunted house plot, you have some seriously great horror movie potential.
The Deep House is a 2021 French supernatural horror film written and directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. A young and modern couple who go to France to explore an underwater house and share their findings on social media undergoes a serious change of plans when the couple enters the interior of a strange house located at the bottom of a lake and their presence awakens a dark spirit that haunts the house.
the first thing about this movie that becomes obvious is just how amazingly Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo directed the fuck out of this movie. damn near every shot is gorgeous, to the point i wish i had caught this movie in theatres. you may expect movies that have youtubers for main characters to get annoying, and this movies characters definitely have some of those moments. There main motivation for this whole movie is Bens greed for views, but they never show them as black and white meat bags waiting to die. the intro is well paced and does a good job of setting the stage for this movie, but once we actually get to the DEEP HOUSE....Well...
as any good should, i have definitely snuck into a place or two i shouldn't have. its fun as hell to explore empty old places like this one, but within an hour or so you start to get bored. at first the scenes of them exploring the DEEP HOUSE are interesting, but soon enough there is no real reason to be afraid. there is no threat, no suspense, 0 stakes, horrible dialogue, and all the little hints at this movies mystery are mostly uninteresting. 45 minutes in, I'm having a hard time finding reasons to keep watching this movie.
so i stopped.
