You know those little digs certain women seem to enjoy insulting people with? little things like telling you to slow down on the chow so you don't get fat, small comments about your job from someone with a career, and the quiet disgust at the things you are the most passionate about. There far too weak to actually say how they feel to your face, so they make a thousand shitty comments to break you down until suddenly you're the bad guy for not being able to take all of that abuse and speaking up. It's an engine shows like THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF _______ run on, and it's at the heart of this movie.
in general, I don't have the best track record with movies like these. Comedic horror movies that are very clearly made for a younger more modern audience that essentially becomes a gory teen drama than a horror movie. This looks like the exact NETFLIX style trendy bloody cash grab, but fuck it even if this movie wasn't great, it would be interesting to talk about.
SISSY is a 2022 Australian horror comedy directed by Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes. Cecilia and Emma were tween-age BFFs who were going to grow old together and never let anything come between them, until Alex arrived on the scene. Twelve years later, Cecilia is a successful social media influencer living the dream of an independent, modern millennial woman... until she runs into Emma for the first time in over a decade. Emma invites Cecilia away on her bachelorette weekend at a remote cabin in the mountains, where Alex proceeds to make Cecilia's weekend a living hell.
At first, everything I thought about this movie appeared to be correct. The soundtrack feels right out of a TROOM-TROOM video, the tone could be described as awkward teen comedy, and of course this movie shoves it modernness in your face with its excessive use of social media and hip youth slang. I must admit the thought of being trapped in the vapid half assed sea of friendships on display is pretty damn scary, but Australia's party scene gets old real fast. this opening does nothing to make me give a shit about a single character in this movie, and i must admit I hard time being optimistic.
it was about here I became convinced I wouldn't like this movie, just past the 10-minute mark.in the past I would have stopped watching this movie and given up, but this time I decided to suck it up and wait for anything worth watching to happen. About 20 minutes in we get a peek at Sissy's already cracking mental state being a successful social media influencer living the dream of an independent modern millennial woman comes with. It's very clear very quickly the whole Warm and bubbly socialite lifestyle she is trying to live is a mask for her darker trauma and feelings of rage, and once that has been established this movie feel like a bomb with a lit fuse. Finally, this movie has something that holds my interest.
a violently repressed third wheel waiting to snap, themes of competition among women, this just might actually go somewhere. At this point we are 40 minutes into a movie that's just under 2 hours, and once again some deep dark voice in my brain screamed at me to stop watching. But I kept on going anyway, and did I mention just how insufferable these characters are? Its only amplified by just how realistic all of this cruelty is, and thankfully bitches bitched start dying before the 1 hour mark.
but that doesn't save this movie from being aggressively uninteresting and frequently plain boring, so eventually I caved and stopped watching this overindulgent mess of a film.
