THE BROOD

A disturbed woman is receiving a radical form of psychotherapy at a remote, mysterious institute. Meanwhile, her five-year-old daughter, under the care of her estranged husband, is being terrorized by a group of demonic beings. How these two story lines connect is the shocking and grotesque secret of this bloody tale of monstrous parenthood from David Cronenberg, starring Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar. With its combination of psychological and body horror, The Brood laid the groundwork for many of the director’s films to come, but it stands on its own as a personal, singularly scary vision.

-CRITERION COLLECTION

The therapy session that opens this movie is a perfect example of how this movie makes you invested in what's happening. on your first watch its a confusing scene that instantly makes you want to know more. what were the marks all over Mikes skin? what is the goal of the therapy? how exactly does it all work? this is a movie that will never tell you what's going on through exposition dumps, but will always show you just enough to make you want to know more. after watching all of his short films not long ago, this movie really feels like the type of thing David has always wanted to do.

its a bit long, but the ending makes this movie a perfect 9/10
