TETSUO II BODY HAMMER

It's strange. Part of me loves a city like Tokyo, but part of me would quite happily destroy it.

-Shinya Tsukamoto

If your a big fan of black and white surrealist movies, your probably at least a little familar with the name TESUO THE IRON MAN. Its a real nasty look at a mechanical STI that leads to full on insanity, so going in i kind of knew what to expect.

at least that's what i thought

Tetsuo II: Body Hammer (鉄男II Body Hammer) is a 1992 Japanese cyberpunk body horror film directed by Shinya Tsukamoto. It is a bigger-budget sequel utilizing similar themes and ideas as his first film and largely the same cast, though the story is not a direct continuation of that of its predecessor. ordinary salaryman, Taniguchi Tomoo, sees his world crumble when fanatic metal-worshipping skinheads abduct his only son. Forced to unleash his dormant destructive power, Tomoo will finally embrace the cathartic effect of the ultimate metamorphosis, as his naked rage transforms the once-feeble flesh into a grisly symbiosis of hard metal and soft tissue. Who dares to stand in the way of the ultimate body-hammer?

First things first, this movie is unfortunately in color. not a big deal for most people i imagine, but black and white kind of forces your brain to fill in the gaps in a way i have always loved. At least we still get the same box of an 3:4 aspect ratio, and of course a healthy dash of what the fuck am i even looking at here that was almost a constant in the first movie. this movie was directed by the same dud who made the first movie, and by far the most interesting part of this movie is Shinya Tsukamoto's camera work. it reminds of the floating lost soul feeling of Noé's IRREVERSIBLE, and it makes every single shot in this movie fascinating to watch. If you were a fan of the first movies fast paced music video style of editing, this movie will definitely scratch that itch.

perhaps the strangest part of this whole movie is its mixing of tones. sometimes its a Power Rangers style cheesy action movie, sometimes its a ultra tough boy workout video, sometimes its a family drama, sometimes its a sci-fi, sometimes we stick a camera inside of leading mans body, and other times its a gut wrenchingly violent horror movie. But no matter what it is, its one of the most inspiring movies i have ever seen.

a love a movie that really makes me want to pickup a camera and experiment with what kind of shots work best

10000000000/10
