i don't own many horror magazines, but it was shortly after my first horror con i read about this movie in RUE MORGUE. i remember reading that this whole movie was in Russian, and that only got me more excited. i made a mental note to check it out when it was released, and since it released almost a year ago i have had a hell of a time tracking it down. with all the expectations i had set going in, this movie could have easily been a disappointment. luckily for me, this movie was everything i had hoped it would be.
When it comes to sci-fi alien movies like this one, there is already a well established formula. creature gets on ship without anyone noticing, creature infects one person, than kills everyone else on board one but one. thankfully, this movie ditches that format almost entirely.
this movie is a Farley slow paced, and not really about the creature at all. the majority of this movie is devoted to a hand full of well acted characters trying to find a way to separate man from alien. yes this alien uses its host, but unlike xenomorphs they hop back in and out every night for a short time. even more interesting than this movies alien is how all of the other characters interact and treat the alien. there is a lot more going on here than shoot the bad alien, and its makes for a compelling movie. a lot like AD ASTRA, this movie was marketed as something it never was trying to be.
what it is trying to be is one hell of a compelling narrative that just so happens to feature on of the most unique creatures i have seen in a very long time. which makes this one of the most unique movies i have seen in an equally long time.
definitely worth the wait
10/10
