Spree is a 2020 American comedy horror film directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko. The gonzo-style satire follows social media obsessed rideshare driver Kurt Kunkle played by Joe Keery, who in an attempt to become viral livestreams himself murdering passengers.
As somebody who has been making content online for way to long, its impossible not to relate to Kurt at first. We have been fed the false narrative for a long time that fame is easily achievable and one random video can make you an overnight star, and that leads to a lot of disappointment. It also leads to sense of entitlement that people will have to watch your content if YOU think its worth watching, and this movie takes that entitlement to the most dangerous place possible.
The strange part about it? its also a really charming and fun movie that works as a damn fine comedy
Kurt Himself is of course hilariously awkward, but every character who ends up in his ride share is a walking human cliché in the best way possible. A lot of time when movies try to do a modern take on social commentary it feels out of touch, but even though this movie came out 2 years ago its still surprisingly relevant. Its both exaggerated for comedy and totally realistic, and its amazing that not a single joke in this movie falls flat. For those who are only interested in a self aware comedy this movie fits the bill perfectly, but it also works as an AMERICAN PSYCHO style character study as Kurt loses his shit.
Around the one hour mark of this movie, you start to wonder how this movie could possibly end. The crimes keep getting more violent and disturbing, and i really couldn't imagine how things would end for our greasy little murder boy Kurt. they do a great job of heightening the stakes to the point where you feel like they cant get any higher, and then they do. there really isn't anything strictly horror in the first half, but the time this movie is drawing to a close its a straight up horror movie.
got to love that finale
