M. Night has so many bad movies that i never really.... oh wait om sorry my bad. i thought this was THE VILLAGE. Oh well i have been looking forward to seeing the next chapter in the SAW series. Oh wait shit my bad this is a different spiral movie from 2019. im being told its "the gay one."
I feel like this movie kinda got swept under the rug. i was a full fledged horror nut and had never heard anything about this movie when it came out. I have been out longer than this movie. Perhaps thats due to how slow this movie is, and lacking on its horror. This movie tries to be a family drama, and this mediocre at it. this movie tries to be a horror movie, and sucks at it. and this movie tries to be a compelling thriller with an interesting mystery to solve, and its mediocre at it.
but that being said, this movie really excels at handling certain topics extremely well. The way it shows each member of the family receiving discrimination is super effective, and is by far the scariest shit in this movie. His monologue about just how unsafe it is is truly upsetting. Jeffrey Bowyer Chapman is incredible in both this scene and this movie. the scenes with him as our solo lead in the second act are straight up perfect. he is scared as shit, and its hard not to be right along with him. its got a bizarre avid lynch dream sequence vibe that i love dearly.
if you have the patience for the first half, the second half is well worth your time. even if the ending is a little preachy. and the baby penis guy from scary movie 2 is the main villain. so there is that.
7/10
