SPIDER 2002

"He's sort of falling together instead of falling apart"

-DAVID CRONENBURG

dear god trying to watch this movie was a bitch, so let me do the bitching and tell you hard it was. Unfortunately Sam Raimi's SPIDERMAN came out the same year, so most pirate sites that claim to have this movie actually have SPIDERMAN instead. whatever, i have no problem renting this from google, but after my purchase was confirmed, it wasn't in my library. my card was charged, and i got nothing in return. so i bought this movie twice. 20 minutes and 20 bucks later, i finally got to sit down and watch this movie.

Spider is a 2002 psychological thriller film produced and directed by David Cronenberg and based on the 1990 novel of the same name by Patrick McGrath, who also wrote the screenplay. David Cronenberg received the screenplay from Patrick McGrath out of the blue, with a note attached saying that Ralph Fiennes was interested in playing the part of Spider. After about four pages, Cronenberg had decided that he wanted to do the film.

Dennis Clegg is in his thirties and lives in a halfway house for the mentally ill in London. Dennis, nicknamed "Spider" by his mother has been institutionalized with acute schizophrenia for some 20 years. He has never truly recovered, however, and as the story progresses we vicariously experience his increasingly fragile grip on reality.

to be honest, for the longest time i had no interest in this movie because i thought it was closer to a SE7EN style cop drama. i wasn't even 1% correct. This movie is a lot more like WILLARD without the fantasy elements and comedic tone. WILLARD has quite a few moments of levity and laughs, this movie does not. This is undoubtedly the kind of movie that will be lazy labelled as "Depressing" instead of what it really is, Emotional. Its impossible not to sympathize with Ralph Fiennes's tortured and confused performance in this movie, and slowly watching this young boy become more and more disturbed is gut wrenching. Schizophrenics aren't a group that gets a lot of sympathy due to the public fearing what they don't understand, and this movie really makes you feel his pain.

And of course because this is a Cronenberg movie, the movie is beautifully directed, amazingly acted, Beautiful, Disgusting, and everything in-between.

i really don't think Cronenberg is capable of making a bad movie.

10/10
