this movie has everything i love. an amazing radio personality, gory kills, and awesome spooky creatures. this movie is one of the best anthology movies, and i have seen it several times. so in typical anthology style, lets take a look at the segments one by one.
OPENING
This opening is actually how this movie ends, so it dose not make a lot of sense if this is your first watch. also worth mentioning that this opening was directed by radio silence, the same team that has worked on V/H/S, Ready or not, and i was surprised to learn that they are directing the new scream movie coming out in 2022. This intro segment introduces the floaty murder ghosts (They never get a name so thats what i will call them), and to guys who are running from something. what are they running from you ask? its never really explained but i have some theories for the end of this review.
YA LIKE JAZZ?
3 fun young gal pals are traveling to there next gig (they play jazz) when there tire explodes. some weird religious couple picks them up, and they have supper at there place. one super awkward and creepy dinner scene later, 2 of the 3 girls are vomiting black goop and dressing like the Grady twins. turns out they are ageless weirdos who worship a strange god that grants them eternal youth. our final girl escapes and....
HIT AND... HANGOUT FOR A WHILE
This is the best segment in this movie, and one of my favorite shorts in any anthology movie. our final girl runs out to flag by a car, and is immediately run over in a gruesome accident. the man calls 911 and takes here to the nearest hospital. unfortunately the hospital is totally empty, so with the help of the voice on the phone he tries to save her life. what follows is super cringe worthy in the best way possible. he kills the girl and hear s some laughter over his headphones. turns out he was never talking to 911 at all. this segment is wonderfully scary, and has a great 1408 vibe. you cant trust your surroundings, and it seems like your doomed to fail.
the segment ends and its revealed that who he was talking to this whole time was...
JAILBREAK
Jailbreak from the emoji movie!
im kidding of course, it was some women at a payphone nearby who is definitely not human. considering that there were 3 voices coming from the phone, it makes you wonder what kind of people live in the town. well we get a good luck at some more of the towns folk and they seem to be a part of the same cult as earlier. its an interesting idea they never really explain, which i totally love.explaining shit is for suckers.
blah blah blah, guy finds his sister, guy dies due to naked dudes in the desert, and now we move on to the end. of this movie
OH SHIT ITS THOSE GUYS AGAIN
Great home invasion ending here, and guess who is doing the invading? its those dudes from the beginning! oh and some extra dude was there to up our kill count. but why were they breaking in you ask? the only real clues we get is one of the men whispering something to the wife, who then turns to the husband with disgust. the only other clue we get is when there killing the husband, they show him a picture of a little girl. im guessing that he killed/raped that girl, but its super open ended.
also worth noting once the family is dead, the weird floaty ghost bois burst from there bodies, which makes me think that they may be a spirit of revenge, pumpkin head style.
and thats the movie. almost every short in this movie kicks ass, and its defintly one of my favorite horror movies.
9/10
