SHIVERS (1975)

In case you didn't notice... i'm on a bit of a Cronenburg kick at the moment. also before we get started, apparently this movie is also called IT CAME FROM WITHIN in some parts of the world which is a way better title considering this movies plot.

apparently, a group of scientists are working on a parasite that can attack unhealthy cells and organs then live in the human body harmlessly. and apparently, one of those scientists went bat shit crazy and made a parasite that's part aphrodisiac and part SLITHER style worms that are reeking havoc in a Toronto apartment building and making everyone crazy horny. or maybe crazy and also horny. sounds like a Cronenburg movie alright.

this definitely wasn't my favorite Cronenburg movie. i'm not saying this isn't a good movie, just that its a very slow movie. its got a few great scenes of bloody goodness, but you need to wade through an ocean of characters talking about what s happening instead of seeing it happen. but when the crazy shit happens, its all fiercely practical and equally nasty.

there are a lot of individual elements that make this movies parasite frighting, but as a whole it really never feels scary. the idea of something growing inside of you is scary enough, but the fact the infected often rape there victims is even worse. i mean come on; the inciting incident for the whole movie is an old man carving into a teenager girl in his apartment; that should be disturbing. but it just... isn't. its a classic example of a great idea with mediocre.

for the first time ever, i am disapointed by David Cronenburg.

for every Lynch there is a DUNE i guess

5/10
