In computer and video games, sequence breaking is the act of performing actions or obtaining items out of the intended linear order or of skipping "required" actions or items entirely.
I Have been watching so much classic black and white horror lately, so it about time to get back to some semi modern surreal colorful nastiness. This movie is based on the urban legend of Polybius, a video game that supposedly surfaced in Portland in the early 1980s as part of a government mind-control experiment which produced addictive and psychoactive effects in players.
A reclusive video arcade repair technician experiences bizarre biomechanical mutations and Cronenbergian hallucinations when a mysterious new arcade machine appears in his shop. Reality itself threatens to fracture as he works to solve its mystery and the new chaos that has entered his life.
Chase Williamson was a highlight of SCARE PACKAGE, so its a welcome surprise to see him being 1000% less goofy here. a bit more goofiness' from him would definitely give his character more of an ark plot wise, but i suppose the mopey head in the clouds nerd we get instead is more realistic. the biggest problem with this movies plot is that there really isn't an inciting incident. MOSQUITO STATE follows a damn near identical plot, and that movie clearly gives you an inciting incident. we never here anyone talk about the arcade machine, we never see its effects on a standard opening victim, nothing. for all we now this is some random Mrs. PacMan machine that set this guy off for no reason. a very squishy Mrs. PacMan machine....
we also get a real slow and uninteresting romance subplot that isn't well acted enough to hit home, directing that could have been amazing is rather mundane, there is very little suspense or scares, and the worst crime of all is how little actually happens in this movie. fix up a machine, go on a date, fix up a machine, go on a date, then maybe he will fix up a machine and go on another date.
you want to watch a good trippy ass movie like this one? checkout BEYOND THE BLACK RAINBOW or MANDY instead. comparing this movie to Cronenberg is to greatly insult Cronenberg
meh/10
