In order for me to talk about why Saint Maude works so well, I need to talk about why Stephen King's survivor type works so well. Survivor type has always been one of my favorite Stephen King short stories, and that's simply because it's fascinating to watch someone go batshit crazy. Especially when the entire thing consists of a diary written by said crazy person from there own perspective. It makes you constantly question what's real and what's a hallucination, and its one hell of a disturbing thrill ride.
That's exactly what this movie is. It's the diary of a woman who is struggling with her queer urges, massive trauma, and desperately trying to convince herself god is real. She's so desperate to believe it that when she starts suffering from hallucinations, she simply sees them as signs from god. Even if the sign from God is telling her to hurt herself or the people around her. Not only that her hallucinations are being reinforced by someone who doesn't know how much damage she is doing.
And I haven't even touched yet on how well directed and acted this movie is. If you pause this movie at any point in time you would have a great desktop background, and the acting is eerie perfection. Mod herself is full of small character mannerisms that I just love.
If you love movies like raw and excess flash, you will definitely love this a24 style master piece.
