PET SEMATARY: BLOODLINES

Updated: Nov 13, 2023

I'm a big fan of the novel, and of the original film, but I must ask a question. WHY OH WHY DO THE KEEP REMOVING JUDD'S ACCENT? Every version of the character without it just feels... wrong.

Maybe with the whole Pet Sematary IP, dead is better.

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is a 2023 American supernatural horror film directed by Lindsey Anderson Beer (in her directorial debut), and co-written by Beer and Jeff Buhler. Serving as a prequel to Pet Sematary (2019). the film stars Jackson White, Forrest Goodluck, Jack Mulhern, Henry Thomas, Natalie Alyn Lind, Isabella Star LaBlanc, Samantha Mathis, Pam Grier and David Duchovny. In 1969, a young Jud Crandall dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within and is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to Ludlow. Banding together, Jud and his childhood friends must fight an ancient evil that has gripped Ludlow since its founding, and once unearthed has the power to destroy everything in its path.

In March 2019, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura stated that a prequel to Pet Sematary (2019) was possible if the film was a success financially. The following month, directors Kevin Kölsch and Denis Widmyer ruled themselves out of returning, saying, "If you were going to do more, you'd probably do backstory stuff. I'd be really interested to see how somebody would do a sequel to this movie. It probably won't be us" Seems like the makers of the remake understood something that this movie doesn't: We don't need any more backstory.

Movies like Ti West's X has already proved that you can recreate an authentic feeling 1970s setting with a modern director, and this movie just totally misses that mark. It doesn't feel like the 1970s, it certainly doesn't feel like Pet Sematary, and the movie's modern direction really clashes with the gritty tone of the story itself. If you were to ask my humble opinion before making this movie, I would recommend you go the route of EVIL DEAD.

Whether its an evil book bound in human flesh or a creepy Pet Sematary, its fun to watch how the people who interact with its power use it differently over each new generation. If you ask me there has never been a bad EVIL DEAD movie, and a lot of the reason why has to do with the variety of both its setting and characters. We have seen how the story plays out for a small family of 4, and this movie laterally steps backwards to tell us a story we already know. If you have read the novel, you will have all the Timmy time you could ever want.

Why not show a modern family in a more modern Ludlow? Why try and answer questions nobody was asking about the lore? Why would you take one of the best characters in horror history, and turn him into an Edward Cullen looking soy boy?

I have heard this called a lifeless horror movie, and i have a hard time arguing.
