I had zero plans whatsoever to talk about this movie, because i didn't like the movie. after watching this movie for the first time, i thought it was slow, annoying, and not worth re-watching anytime soon. But tonight when i was looking for some horror background noise, i thought i would listen to it while i work. but of course it sucked me in, so lets talk about it.
A disparate group of individuals takes refuge in an abandoned house when corpses begin to leave the graveyard in search of fresh human bodies to devour. The pragmatic Ben (Duane Jones) does his best to control the situation, but when the reanimated bodies surround the house, the other survivors begin to panic. As any semblance of order within the group begins to dissipate, the zombies start to find ways inside -- and one by one, the living humans become the prey of the deceased ones.
BARBRA
Th e biggest problem with this movie for me will always be Barbra's uselessness, but this time around I'm able to see what Romero was going for. a character being so terrified they refuse to accept the reality of what's happening is a great way to show pure terror, but this misses the mark. the horror doesn't come from the dissociation, it comes from the moment you snap back to reality and fully accept what's happening. Barbra gets that moment, but it takes way to long and feels just as unsatisfying as all her other scenes. and even after that moment, she remains useless for the whole movie.
HARRY COOPER
Fuck this god awful ass hat. because of this shit stain on the underwear of mankind, this movie is packed full of needless yelling that feels like nails on a chalkboard. a toned down version of his character would have been more than enough conflict for the movie, but alas this cock juggling thunder cunt is permanently set at 1000000% asshole.
DISASTER RESPONSE
As much as this movie is about a small group of survivors, its also about how we respond to disaster. as individuals, and a state/province, even in the most extreme possible scenario we cant let go of our vices and prejudices. the TV/Radio segments are the best part of this movie, and they do a good job of showing how the "civilized" organizations of the word is reacting to the end of days. the farm house shows things on a much more individual scale, and that's especially prevalent in the way this movie treats women.
THE GOOD STUFF
The acting here feels like a stage play, and i think this whole movie would work a lot better as a play.
The directing is a lot stronger than i realized on my first watch, so shoutout to my home boy Romero for this beautiful black and white classic
the ending is INCREDIBLE
The zombies have quite a few moments of dark comedy, complete with intestine dance party
with all of that said, I'm still not a huge fan of this movie. but i respect it 1000 times more for its role in shaping the entire horror genre.
fuck you harry cooper/10
