Well class hope everyone did there required watching of David Lynch's The Art Life so you have a snowballs chance in hell of deciphering this movie. And no snickering about the lesbian stuff.
I am of course a huge David Lynch fan, and you really need to know a lot about both him, and Hollywood history to watch his movies. You need to watch Sunset Boulevard, The Denny's were Hollywood extras would frequent, how much David Loves to make abstract ideas into human characters, Rita Hayworth's personal life, the layout of Hollywood streets, and maybe a bit of Spanish.
it impossible to talk about this movie without digging into its compelling mystery, and I really don't want to say to much about it. I will however, leave a little gift for the folks who have no clue what the fuck happened in this movie. when this movie was first released on DVD, there was a small card in every copy. This card was titled DAVID LYNCH'S 10 CLUES TO SOLVING THIS THRILLER. Here are all 10 clues in full.

Jesus what a painfully incomplete review. lets give this another shot
I hate the way I talked about this movie after my first watch. I was snarky, condescending, and far to focused on figuring out the mystery. this movie deserves a lot more discussion than the half ass copy paste job I gave this movie on my first watch, so lets give this another shot shall we?
the reason i had such a hard time understanding this movie the first time is the way the story is told. From Diane's view, the plot is told entirely backwards. from that perspective, the seemingly random character appearances make a lot more sense. they were never introduced to the audience, but Diane knows them all well. after learning this along with far to many YouTube videos, I figured out the plot to my own satisfaction. and to be fair, I'm not trying to shit on those type of YouTube videos. They are often a great resource to learn film school terms that help make explaining movies in general a lot easier. but i would rather not try and explain this movie to much. with explanation comes a certain... well we can talk about that a little later.
long story short, I love this movie. I love all of the Lynch regulars in the cast, and how this movie doesn't really try hard to explain itself to you. it jumps to seems that feel completely unrelated, and is chalk full of micro mysteries all along the way. its an effective comedy, horror, and mystery without ever suffering from tonal whiplash. i wish i could watch it for the first time again, because I can never watch it the same way. When you know how things play out, you can see just how much foreshadowing is scattered through out the whole movie. sometimes its kind of funny, sometimes its gut wrenching, and by the end your begging for the mystery to remain forever unsolved. its a movie that slower lowers you into the depths of hell,
I can still appreciate the technical brilliance of the directing, the surprising amount of comedy, the darkness of its horror, and the amazing acting from the whole cast. I still love the dreamy strangeness of this whole movie, and the abstract way David Lynch chose to covey the story. But no matter how many times i watch this movie, I cant get back the mystery.
I will never get the joy of trying and figure this movie out again.
so maybe skip the YouTube videos claiming to explain this movie, and just enjoy not knowing.
