although this has changed now, for a while Nic Cage was totally unbelievable as any character other than himself.
Carly and her brother, Josh, are forced to protect themselves from harm when an unknown phenomenon causes all parents to violently attack their children. until the parents start there assault, this movie is basically just waiting for things to pop off. we get the obligatory establishing scenes with the family, and they are easily the weakest part of this movie. this opening was a good opportunity to explore the parent/child relationship in a humorsly candid way, but the movie largely fails on that goal. it feels to heavy handed, and in trying to be modern this movie ironically dates itself. unless this movie was working on its own planned obsolescence.
despite this fumbled opening, the rest of this movie is really enjoyable. it very self aware of its ridiculous concept, and does a great job showing the wide spread chaos that is happening all over town. the opening massacre perfectly sets the tone for this movie in both its violence its black comedy and comedy. Every complaint i had about the failures of this movies opening are later made up for by some surprisingly candid scenes of the parents discussing what there life has become. its nice that this movie isn't just a vehicle for Nic Cage destruction, but boy does this movie have some great Nic Cage scenes.
so if your looking for a good Nic Cage movie to help turn off your brain, you could do a lot worse than this movie.
