MAY (2002)

I wanna love somebody but I don't know how
I've been so long lonely and it's getting me down
I wanna throw my body in the river and drown
I wanna love somebody but I don't know how

-SUCKERS PRAYER, THE DECEMBERISTS

apparently whatever elevator you go to in this movie, somebody will be making out in there. maybe i should hang around elevators more.

Young misfit May (Angela Bettis) endured a difficult childhood because of her lazy eye. And though contact lenses have helped May adjust as a young adult, her deep-seated awkwardness remains a problem. Adam (Jeremy Sisto), a young man obsessed with fixing wrecked cars, takes a shine to May's oddball ways. But May's strangeness ultimately drives him away, leaving her open to the advances of her co-worker Polly (Anna Faris). When Polly dumps her too, May's emotional instability turns violent.

watching this movie again for my annual Halloween movie binge, i found even more to love about it. my first watch i had no clue who "The Breeders" were, no clue that Angela Bettis had played Carrie White, or that Jeremy Sisto would go on to be in the very first WRONG TURN movie a year later. All that fun stuff was fun as hell to learn, but even with 0 background info this movie is a cringe worthy delight in the best way possible.

Angela is a social outcast who is awkward as hell, but when the movie starts she isn't to far gone. a few friends and a lot of therapy could have saved her, but every character in this movie is pushing her away, and the question is how much is May to blame for what happens to / because of her. a lot like DEAD RINGERS, this movie is a great character study made even more complicated by love triangles with one crazy strong performance from Angela Bettis that anchors the whole movie into feeling completely believable.

Mays character is full of so many small mannerisms that all work as little puzzle pieces to figuring out what May is thinking. shes constantly struggling with her sexuality, anxiety, body image, and of course being a functional adult. shes relatable and easy to sympathize with, at the same time we have no idea what she is capable of. she a massive ball of nervous potential energy that you are constantly waiting for her to snap and fly off the deep end. shes quietly terrifying, especially when this movies finale kicks off.

if that s not enough this movie is packed full of small moments i absolutely love. Adams college movie, Ana Faris being a bad actor 24/7, That creepy as doll as a metaphor for May's mental state, and of course just how bat shit crazy May is when this movie ends. at least THE LOBSTER did it off screen.

also Adam is hot as shit. no real way to work that in organically just wanted you to know. i would be simpin for him to

10/10
