JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

Hey man i'm running this website, if i want to talk about one of my favorite musicals then god dang it i shall do just that.

before we dive straight into this, i want to give a bit of context about my experience with theater. in grade nine i was presented with several optional courses, and since i didn't feel brave enough for theater i signed up for theater tech. or at least i thought i did until my second semester when i realized i had checked the wrong box and found myself a part of BIG the musical. its a mistake i'm glad i made as i would spend the rest of my time at that school in various plays and musicals, but i had never really seen a live musical. one of my theater buds invited me over to watch this musical, and i wasn't sure what to expect going in. i had never read the bible at all, and i figured i would rather watch a musical then dive through endless biblical lore to get the whole story. the last thing i expected was to enjoy this as much as i did.

I'm very aware of how corny this sounds, but this changed my view on what musicals could be. when i thought of musicals think of people in dusty old robes giving long monologues in between corny dance numbers. the kind of thing you see at the local community center/college where all the kids come out and bow at the end and then mom drives them home. this is the farthest thing from that idea imaginable.

every single person who was involved in this was giving 100000%, and it really shows. the costuming an production design are both incredible, and the atmosphere this musical creates is both incredibly unique and familiar. the setting is a character in itself, and i still cant help but get excited when the set begins to transform each time. the set is quite literally crawling with talented musicians, and i love how the normally hidden pit band are all extras as well as the backing music. and speaking of music...

this musical definitely suffers a bit form the "this is an old musical from the 80s" feeling, but almost every song slaps. whats the buzz makes me want to claw my eyes out, but every other song is damn near perfect. Alice Cooper is of course the highlight of the whole show, but there is never a dull moment. its a feast for the eyes and ears, and the 2018 version of this show is why Jesus Christ Superstar is one of my favorite musicals.

still a little fuzzy on the bible story though...

9/10 cause seriously, whats the buzz is just a yucky song. really takes me out of the whole thing.
