ANTICHRIST is still my favorite film opening ever, but this movie is a close second. just like the movie itself, its quiet and foreboding perfection.
also kind of ironic that Leonard Nimoy ends up becoming emotionless.
Perhaps I'm just saying this after coming off of the original movie's bland directing, but Philip Kaufman directed the hell out of this movie. instead of this movie telling you about the imposter people, this movie shows them right from the very start. they are in the background of scenes, hiding behind doors, and sometimes barely in focus. there are massive numbers so early in the movie is a great way to show just how doomed our main cast really is. and just like this movie's director, the whole cast here gives 110%.
Replacing the originals Dr. Bennell is no easy task, but Donald Sutherland does one hell of a job. his chemistry with Brooke Adams is perfect, and every character in this movie feels like a real person. Jeff Goldblum is basically just himself, Leonard Nimoy is perfect as a rational psychiatrist, and the whole movie is packed with minor characters that are full of personality. as a result of so many intreating characters walking around, 1978 San Fransico is full of just as much personality as its characters.
I didn't dive too deep into the effects of the original movie, simply because there wasn't much to talk about. this movie, however, benefits a lot from the 21-year gap in practical effects technology. the slowly developing bodies look a lot more alien and unsettling, and this movie isn't afraid to get real nasty to show the full scope of the alien's abilities. but just like the original, this movie isn't really about the aliens at all. it's about a small cast of main characters who slowly learn that the earth has already been invaded, and there is nothing they can do about it.
just like the first movie, this is easily one of the best Sci-Fi movies of its time.
