Often times just because the movie has something on its poster, doesn't mean its actually in the movie. Chopping Mall for example has no power glove wielding slasher, but this movies poster is wonderfully accurate to how gory this movie will be.
Also Sam Raimi used to be hot, even if he does have some nasty olive breath
It's the night before Walnut Lake's neighborhood supermarket closes its doors forever. Ace check-out girl, Jennifer has a deranged ex-boyfriend who's fresh out of prison. When he appears outside, weird things start happening. The phone lines are cut, and the night crew starts dying ...one by one, in the most gruesome ways imaginable. An ex-cop (Bruce Fucking Campbell!) is trying to find out who the killer is and what possessed him to start the bloody rampage.
Even though this movie was made in 1989, This movie one big cheezie 80s slasher through and through. the amateur acting and pacing gives this movie a (mostly) unintentional comedic tone, but the cast does a job job of making the store feel believable. it helps having so many recognizable brand names on the store shelves, which was accomplished by a company that specialized in damaged goods delivering over two tons of defective merchandise to stock the store. it also helps having a handful of talented actors running around the store like Dan Hicks, Bruce Campbell, Eugene Robert Glazer, Elizabeth Cox as a wonderful final girl, A surprisingly natural Sam Raimi, and of course Ted Raimi chewing on the scenery in ways only Ted Raimi could pull off. the characters alone elevate this movie from the hundreds o f80s slashers, but the directing is what really gets my rocks off.
Scott Spiegel has a lot of fun with the camera work in this movie, in a style i have started calling "Raimi Adjacent". there are a few shots that feel inspired by Raimi's EVIL DEAD movies, but his work here still has its own unique style. He often makes the supermarket setting look beautiful, and his directing is undoubtedly the best part of this movie. although we do get some crazy kills later on...
the first kill in this movie is very lack luster, and happens entirely off screen. naturally this had me worried for the rest of this movies kills, but the second kill really starts things off properly. all of the kills in this movie from here on out are amazingly practical and darkly humorous, and the pacing really keeps the kills coming in the last half hour. seriously yall, i cannot stress to you just how amazing and gruesome these kills are. if you thought the character based first hour of this movie was to slow, the last 30 minutes will have you on your feet cheering.
i am so immensely grateful that after watching horror movies for the last 15 years of my life, there are still hidden gems like this one waiting to be uncovered.
HELL FUCKING YES/10
