INSIDE (2023)

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

This movie feels as if 1408 was just caused by a glitching Alexa

Inside is a 2023 psychological thriller film written by Ben Hopkins and directed by Vasilis Katsoupis in his feature directorial debut. It stars Willem Dafoe, Gene Bervoets, and Eliza Stuyck. On Rotten Tomatoes, 63% of 104 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 6.1/10.

With his sights set on robbing the prized possession of a famed art collector, experienced art thief Nemo breaks into a high-tech New York City penthouse. At first, everything seems to go as planned; however, there is no such thing as a foolproof plan. And when the distressing wail of the security alarm system crushes the intruder's dreams of early retirement, Nemo finds himself trapped in an impenetrable prison of concrete and glass filled with an enviable collection of multimillion-dollar works of art. Now, Nemo is on his own. As the days turn into weeks and hunger, thirst, and fatigue set in, the doomed invader must keep a clear head to keep the life-threatening situation under control and beat the odds. But the question remains. How can Nemo escape from the inside?

Right off the bat, I was pretty suspicious about the concept of this movie. Could someone really get trapped like this by total accident? Doesn't it all seem a little too convenient? Anyways... Once this movie's brief and fast-paced heist scene end and we are officially locked in, things are very.... slow. He sleeps. He Pees. He bathes himself in Werner Hertzog's kiddie pool. He looks at the fish. You get a good long look at how fucked he is with no narration to fill the silence.

It's about 30 minutes into this movie I wish this rich asshole had a sex dungeon or something

One of my problems with this movie is you never really know what Nemo is thinking. I'm all for showing and not telling, but the almost total lack of insight into his rapidly declining mental state is a real drag. Dafoe gives an amazing performance as always, but seriously god damn. This movie had me checking the runtime every 20-30 minutes to see if it was almost over.

No thanks/10
