this movie gave me 10000% more Shrek content than i was expecting. the Shrek parts really make this movie a perfect 10 for me.
I haven't seen this movie in years and it is defiantly one of my favorites. New York after being empty for years is an amazing setting for a horror movie. similar to 12 monkeys, the zoo animals have become part of the ecosystem, plants grow in parking lots, and everywhere is eerily silent. this movie make excellent use of sound to show you just how quiet things are without people, and the opening shots really show that in an awesome way. the movie also has very little soundtrack, which adds to that feeling in the best way possible. another way this movie creates the feeling of emptiness is the way Nevil interacts with the mannequins he has set up and his dog. every time Robert speaks, there is always a tinge of sadness in his voice. you can tell being alone for this long has really affected him, and how he is struggling to make it day to day.
having to be inside before the sun goes down adds a great element of tension whenever Robert is out gathering supplies or hunting for food. the creature are barely sen for the fist half of the movie, and it adds a great level of fear to this movie. we have no idea whats out there, all we know is what they sound like like. they live in the dark and hunt at night. so when his dog runs of into the dark and he is forced to go find her, we finally get our first look at the infected. and oh boy do they reek of 2007. they are entirely CGI and just look goofy. they are still threatening, and it dose not really distract me from enjoying the movie.
i honestly think that the CGI is the only real flaw this movie has. Will Smith kicks ass, the setting is is great, the Shrek is great, this movie fucking rocks.
