HOTEL INFERNO

Updated: Aug 15, 2023

Many moons ago, I heard talk that one of the UK's goriest films was a little movie called ADAM CHAPLIN. As a matter of fact, when I sat down to write this review, I thought this would be a review for Adam Chaplin. But then I started to look into director Giulio De Santi and his company NECROSTORM and decided this would be a better movie to introduce me to his work. before I even talk about the actual movie here, let me give a quick shoutout to NECROSTORM: a studio born in 2009 that makes wonderfully horror-filled art in the form of Movies, Games, Cartoons, Comics, Music and Merchandise. Anyways... what was I...

oh right HOTEL INFERNO, got it.

Hotel Infierno (English: Infernal Hotel) is a 2015 Argentine drama-horror film, produced by Mavelo Films Argentina, Milonga Entertainment and Ninja Films. Assigned the lucrative task of assassinating a couple of alleged serial killers hiding in one of the powerful businessman Jorge Mistrandia's hotels, the hardened contract killer, Frank Zimosa, accepts a seemingly easy job. Ordered to execute the killings in an explicitly specified way, Frank will soon find himself double-crossed, as his secretive employer has a hidden agenda. Now--as Frank fights tooth and nail to survive, killing his way out of a maze-like hotel crammed with Mistrandia's demonic henchmen--one thing becomes obvious: he is about to lose not only his puny life but also his immortal soul. Can Frank escape from the nightmarish Hotel Inferno?

This movie feels like an ultra-violent early 2000s videogame with the kind of voice acting that feels straight out of I THINK YOU SHOULD LEAVE. I'm assuming they dubbed this movie over to keep the audience from reading subtitles, and I think if this movie had never been dubbed it would be a lot easier to take seriously. The SPY KIDS Google Glass, the cartoon villain and cartoon protagonist, establishes an amateur filmmaking tone pretty quickly. But like all the best V/H/S Segments, it uses that cheap-as-hell look and tone to really get balls to the wall with its action-movie influence. A little bit like DREDD, a little bit like BASKIN, a little bit like CRANK, It keeps things moving while giving you plenty of satisfying Horror/Action sequences to suck down like popcorn.

Every movie needs an excuse for all the killing, and I actually quite enjoyed the idea behind this movie. A massively wealthy family who collects demons, a feeding a demon with as much pain as you can possibly create, even the more James Bond's super villain type aspects work perfectly well for a movie like this. I'm surprised too Yeager I was to learn more about this movie's lore, and it definitely helps elevate what could be a pretty senseless hack and slash.

Long story short, this movie is a surprisingly fun DOOM-style gory run and gun through a very competent collection of crazy settings and Gore effects.
