So HELLRAISER turned into the next World of Warcraft? well at least the nerds are all horror fans now.
the setup for this movie is surprisingly fun as hell. Gamers playing a MMORPG based on the "Hellraiser" films find their lives endangered after being invited to a rave, the host of which (Lance Henriksen) intends to show them the truth behind the Cenobite mythos. that basically boils down to a bunch of teenage meat bags running around a big ol spooky party mansion screwing whoever possible and dying one by one.
i'm a big fan of the party mansion setting, and Lance Henriksen fits perfectly into the world of HELLRAISER as this party host. in no way is this a good movie, but the extreme 2005ness of this whole movie makes it damn near laughable in hindsight. the soundtrack, the characters, the early 2000s internet, every small detail of this movie screams 2005. the characters are paper thin, the acting is terrible, but its perfectly campy enough to make the whole movie fun as hell.
and of course because this is a hellraiser movie, there plenty of crazy ass gore and hallucination scenes that keep this movie from feeling like your stuck at a boring high school dance. the kills in this series have really been toned down at all, and this movie is no exception. murder chair, decapitations, a room full of people hanging by hooks, and how could we forget about the fetus basement. whether its gore or simple production design, this movie goes balls to the wall to keep things spooky.
just try and ignore Jake moping his way through this movie as the ultimate buzzkill.
TLDR: Its not great but overall its better that a lot of the movies in this series.
7/10
