The turn out for this movie in theaters was completely baffling to me. I saw an elderly couple, 2 family's with 7-12 year olds, and a small smattering of people my age (21). Strange how mainstream a series Halloween has become now to attract such a diverse crowd. If anything it's a great example of just how awesome the first 2 Halloween movies in the new series have been.
But seriously please stop bringing your small children to movies rated 18A.
Going into this movie I just assumed I would love it. I really enjoyed the first Halloween 2018, and this one is all the same people, so how bad could they possibly have screwed it up since the last time they made a Halloween movie?
Halloween 2018 left on a perfect place to start this movie from, but instead this movie opens with one of several very unnecessary flashbacks to the original Halloween movie. The lack of continuity between the movies is completely distracting, and this movie also has flashbacks to the previously seen flashbacks in this movie. It definitely muddles with the newest 2018 timeline.
And when this movie isn't cutting to flashbacks, it's cutting to various side plots that are mostly fumbled. We have the classic "humorous characters established then murdered in there home" that are always well done in this series, but the real problem starts at the Haddonfield bar.
Dear God is this the least realistic setting in any HALLOWEEN movie. I'm a big fan of Michael's end being at the hands of the citizens of Haddonfield, but that idea really only works for the very last movie in the Halloween series. And in order to make it work at all, you really got a cool it with everyone calling Michael Myers pure evil and this "evil must die" shit.
It worked well in the first movie because for a large part of it everyone thought Dr Loomis was crazy. They really didn't take his warning seriously, so when s*** started going down you could tell how deeply scared everyone was.
Bringing back some original cast members to be the leaders of the posse is a great idea, but boy oh boy are there seeing the absolute weakest in the whole movie. Lonnie in particular isn't much of an actor, and his whole performance is over the top and unnecessary. It does have some really strong Michael Myers sans, but a lot of the character moments that stood out in the first one simply don't exist in this movie.
It's a mediocre script that is essentially just a vehicle to watch Michael Myers kill people, no matter what my thoughts are on the script I will always enjoy the way this series handles Michael Myers kills. With the exception of one of the earliest kills in the movie where Michael RUNS out and tackles a cop, I don't have a problem with the way this series shows Michael Myers and his kills. The new mask looks amazing, and the kills in this movie are plentiful and terrifying.
If you're able to turn off your brain and ignore all the plot holes and logic gaps, what you get is Michael Myers running around delivering on some sweet ass kills.
Still kind of bummed they're doing a third movie. No idea how they plan on moving forward from where they are now.
