I have been trying for a long time now to kick the habit of self harm. for months i had quit cold turkey, and tonight i cut myself again. there is a strange eroticism about the thought of self harming for me, and naturally that that darkly luring force it has had over me for most of my life has got me thinking about vampires. (also before we move on to the movie, just so ya'll now i'm way better than i used to be. i don't do this kind of thing every-time i have a bad day anymore.)
also as a far more fun alternative opening to this review, i really recommend doing a deep dive on our leading man Larry Fessenden's IMDB. He is in a lot of the horror movies i have already talked about. THE DEAD DON'T DIE, SESSION 9, You're Next, Cabin Fever 2, Hell he even directed a segment in ABC's of Death 2. anyways... lets chat about this movie.
Set in a gritty, real life New York City, alcoholic Sam meets up with a modern day succubus who marks him and controls his will. As his world unravels he slowly figures out what is happening and has to figure out what to do.
i love the way Larry Fessenden plays Sam. he is equal parts charming and pitiable, and almost feels like the entire city of New York personified. and speaking of the city of New York, holy hell did this movie make the city a fun place to explore full of perfectly New York characters. everything about this movie is 90's in the best way possible, the characters, the setting, even the boxy aspect ratio all blend perfectly to make this drunken loser wandering around New York endlessly entertaining. this very well may be the great grandpa SHAMELESS never knew it had. Soon enough it turns into a just as effective romance with an equally compelling leading lady, and soon enough that romance turns into... well...
if you put this movie on and told the audience this was a romantic comedy, they would most likely believe you for most of the run time. the whole movie has a sort of cheeky sense of humor that is a large part of its charm (even the sex scenes), but it never feels over the top or out of place. its a movie that can hit all of the emotional beats needed to make you invested in the characters, and has just enough goofy charm mixed in to let the horror really sneak up on you and make you feel just as strange and unsure what the fuck is happening as Sam is. there is no big climax where Sam gets violently attacked, this movie is much more about the paranoia of the whole situation.
Long story short this movie kicks ass. i had planned on ending this review with a little more elegance but i'm kind of freaking out. my health is failing on me as per usual, and i just feel like i am cracking up ya know? i,m going to go hunt down a fan now
seriously this movie is shockingly good and deserves to be talked about more/10
