"Shooting began way back in 1995 on director Shinichi Fukazawa‘s Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell (aka The Japanese Evil Dead), but it wasn’t until over 10 years later that the low budget 8mm splatter film was actually finished. Courtesy of Wild Eye Releasing, we’ve learned this week that the film is now finally being released in North America."
-BLOODY DISGUSTING
man, i feel like it has been forever since I actually watched a movie. Work is so busy lately I don't have the time, and when I do get the time, I usually spend it sleeping or playing video games. this seemed like the perfect movie to come back to.
Japanese? Evil Dead? Fuck yes.
After a surprise phone call interrupts his daily workout, beefy body builder Shinji agrees to meet his photojournalist ex-girlfriend to help with her research on haunted houses. Accompanied by a professional psychic, they visit an abandoned house once owned by Shinji's father. But inside the house a dark secret lingers, and they find themselves trapped and tormented by a relentless ghost with a 30-year grudge...
The fact that this movie was shot with a low budget in 8mm film, give the whole movie both the classic super 8 look, and the equally classic low budget chaos of the first EVIL DEAD movie. I must admit i get a kick out of anything filmed in Japan, since it's the only time i ever really get to see what Japan does (or can at least) look like. Its unquestionably one of my favorite horror settings of all time, and I love the amount of urban exploration we get in this movie. This isn't some cabin all alone in the woods, it's a regular old house hiding in plain sight. i would actually argue this movies house is a lot more interesting than EVIL DEAD's cabin, but comparing the 2 movies at all is a bit strange to me.
Yes, we have crazy Sam Raimi gore, a surprisingly perfect Ash look alike (but not act a like), and even a new weird necklace, but that's where the similarities end. It's a tricky situation, since if this didn't have the EVIL DEAD name attached to it, I probably wouldn't have been so eager to watch it. but labelling this movie a remake sort of shits on the countless original ideas this movie brings to the table. I suppose it just goes to show, you could play a million games of chess and have a different game each time.
long story short this movie kicks ass. it's a perfect companion piece to EVIL DEAD in both spooks and laughs, and I will definitely be coming back to this movie
