BRIDE OF CHUCKY

"Like most genres, the horror genre goes in cycles and I think we can thank Kevin Williamson and Scream for reinvigorating the market. Over the years, I had been imagining new scenarios for this series. With his previous successes, we knew it was just a matter of time before we'd be bringing Chucky back and David Kirschner and I both felt that it was important to bring him back in a new way -- we wanted to elevate the series and re-invent it, go beyond what we'd done before. And what we've ended up with is—incredibly—part horror, part comedy, part romance and part road movie. It's a really cool blend of the genuinely creepy and the really funny."

-Don Mancini

I'm EXTREMLY familiar with the first 3 movies in the CHILDS PLAY series. The first movie is a masterfully subtle Chicago classic, the second is often hailed as the best movie of the whole series, and the third film isn't great but its good enough. i know i have seen all of the chucky movies, but after the third one i cant really remember much about the other movies. So that's why i decided to skip the first 3 movies (for now) and start the Chucky chat with a real left turn for the series, BRIDE OF CHUCKY.

Bride of Chucky is a 1998 American slasher film written by Don Mancini and directed by Ronny Yu. The fourth installment in the Child's Play franchise, it stars Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, John Ritter, Katherine Heigl, and Nick Stabile.

The murderous serial killer, Charles Lee Ray, has his body parts being held at a criminal evidence station in the form of a small doll known as the famous Chucky. When his old-time sweet heart, Tiffany, picks up his remaining limbs and puts them back together, she performs a ritual that revives the murderous maniac. But Chucky decides that he wants another individual to help him with his dirty work. So he kills Tiffany, and then revives her as a "doll bride". When they decide to spend their honeymoon with another happy couple on the highway, it becomes another murder spree. With a "blood-bath on wheels" and two murderous dolls, the human couples find that this was going to be a "Highway To Hell" in this gruesome film of blood and gore and a little bit of Chucky & Tiffany.

The CHILDS PLAY movies have always been fun from the start, but this is the first time we have seen a full blown comedy. The craziest part? it totally works for me. When most people think of Chucky they think of a mangled toy doll cracking Freddy Krueger one liners, and this movie finally gives us that Chucky. Its like watching Jason finally find his Hockey mask, and it is satisfying as fuck to finally see Chucky in all his glory. The subtly has died, long live the in your face balls to the 90s grunge wall craziness.

As incredible as it is to see the Chucky at his finest, Jennifer Tilly is Brad Dourif's equal in terms of incredible acting power. The two actors have incredible chemistry together both as a comedy duo and as a couple, and there continued relationship throughout the series is one of the reasons i wanted to do this review in the first place. All of the jokes land, both actors are perfectly ridiculous clichés, and i love them to death. The only real complaint you could have about this movie is the milk toast couple along for the ride, and the ring of douchebag cops that surround them. Although i find both sets of characters annoying, they are very intentionally written to both embrace the clichés, and turn them on there head. We are always laughing at them and never with them, and i love there awkward as fuck Bonnie and Clyde road trip style.

Its violent as fuck, hilarious, a 90s time capsule, a good love story, and a great road trip movie all rolled up into one beautiful movie.

10/10
