This movie has a lot in common with creep. It's a very modern found-footage movie with tons of Technology, but entirely filmed by the characters. The first Grave Encounters felt stuck firmly in the 2000s somewhere, but this one really feels like it could have been made in the last couple of years.
this movie acknowledges that the previous film was a movie. It starts with people on various YouTube channels reviewing the first movie. As some one who loves watching horror movie reviews, they all seemed 100% real.
There's a lots of mentions to other horror movies and horror directors within the first 10 minutes of the movie. It's a movie that's extremely aware if the horror genre, and can't help comparing the original to other horror classics.
Essentially the plot is some kid posts a review of the movie on YouTube, and starts getting responses from someone who lures them back to the asylum.
Most of the lands Preston character in this movie is one of my favourite characters in any horror movie ever. Been stuck in there since the first one, living off of rats and making a map of the entire shifting building. Is completely unhinged in genuinely kind of disturbing to watch.
