I always treated these movies the same way I treat the CREEP movies. Watch them both together and treat it like one long movie.
I love the framing device for this movie. An early ghost hunter show lock themselves in an insane asylum overnight and shit hits the fan. The building used for filming is amazing. You can tell it was once a real asylum with a real history of horror. And our host with the most is Lance Preston, whose role in the second movie made me fall in love with his character. He has the perfect "douchebag ghost hunter" voice that I love.
I also love the irony of some ghost hunter weirdo accidentally telling the truth about how haunted the location really is. And Houston Gray the psychic is straight-up hilarious. It's like he is playing a psychic in a parody of a horror movie.
I think the main issue with any found-footage genre movie, is giving the characters a good reason to be filming all the time. This movie does not only have the TV show to keep them filming, what's a night vision cameras are often the only way to navigate. It's a clever workaround and makes the whole movie Very believable.
There are also lots of great unintentionally ironic moments. The crew have no idea that they are in actual danger yet and are almost constantly trying to put themselves at risk.
There are a ton of small lines of dialogue that are also crazy hilarious considering the context. The cameraman explaining to his daughter that monsters aren't real, Lance describing the exact type of Haunting and not realizing it, lance and his aversion to rats, and so many other great lines.
This movie is well-acted, full of great creepy moments, lots of great characters, and some great kills. Grave Encounters 1 and Grave Encounters 2 are collectively my second favourite found footage movie. But even , I give this movie a solid
10/10
