This moving is a lot more interesting than i was expecting.
off the coast of a small island in Japan, ships keep sinking at the exact same spot. just as strangely, fisherman suddenly are unable to catch a single fish. what is believed to be a typhoon wipes out servals houses on the island, and upon further investigation, parts of the wreckage are found to be radioactive. i love how this movie isn't immediately about Godzilla, and you get a chance to speculate as an audience member as to what's causing all this weird shit. not only that, this movie a great job of showing how all of this destruction effects the people involved. With all of the massive destruction this series would dive into, the smaller stuff feels a lot more relatable and effective.
and holy shit do I love the black and white directing in this movie. it helps to create a lot of shadow on Godzilla himself, and the less we can tell its a dude in a suit the better. especially since this movie has completely dropped the goofiness' of its later entries and is playing this one totally straight.
I will admit when I saw "THE ORIGINAL JAPENSE MASTERPIECE" on the poster, I had to chuckle a bit. Now I think that's a pretty great description.
