In Willy`s Wonderland, I talked about how fun it is to watch Nic Cage beat up all the practical puppets. Turns out i has been fun to watch Puppets wreck shit since the 60s.
I have been interested in checking out the Godzilla series for a while now, but with so many movies its hard to know where to start. it was much easier for me to decide here i wanted to start however, and that has always been with a Mothra movie. i have my theory as to why i was attracted to Mothra, and I'm pretty sure its because of a incident at my moms work she told me about at work.
working at the hospital my mom has stories from work that make my skin crawl, and this one is no exception. Apparently, moths love nothing more than to eat the lining of fire fighters helmets,. and apparently, fire fighters sometimes discover after taking off there helmets that the moth that was trapped inside has climbed into there ears to avoid the heat. fortunately, this movie is nowhere near that level of unsettling
If Godzilla is a Metaphor for nuclear power, this movie is definitely a metaphor for capitalism. its not quite the ass kicking action movie i was expecting. most of this movie is about one of the Mothra eggs, and the cartoon villain who ends up owning it. our main characters here all work a the local newspaper, and spend the entirety of the movie trying to convince the rich boy stereotype to do the right thing and return the egg. despite the lack of action, the 1960s setting feels strangely familiar. rom the superman style daily bugle, to the classic 60s cars, it look's like a lot of U.S movies from the same time. the characters have similar acting style and clothing, and a color pallet that would make the love witch jealous.
perhaps my favorite thing about this movie is just how all the action scenes look. this movie has a strong commitment to practical effects, and the result is a massive display of talent form the crew. Yes Godzilla is clearly a dude in a suit, the miniatures are all very obvious, and the CG stuff looks rough around the edges. but considering this movie is from the 60s, they did one hell of a job with what they had.
I hope all the Godzilla movies are this fun, balls to the wall, and practically done.
9/10
