After the last movie I watched, I needed something this stupid to cleanse my palate.
Going into this movie I wasn't excited. I had a hard time seeing this movie as anything other than a ready-player one-style attempt to assault you with pop culture icons. To my surprise, I found myself enjoying this movie at points.
I'm not saying this is a great movie or anything, but it's a movie that knows it's corny and plays into it well. It's self-aware without being Deadpool levels of snarky and is full of great action scenes in impressive CGI settings.
Yes the plot drags on quite a bit, Taika Waititi's character makes me want to claw my eyes out, The Real World plot of the movie is completely uninteresting, and it's a bit more aggressive with pop culture references in the final act. But honestly, I don't see much of a reason to shit on this movie. It has its faults, but overall it's junk food. I'm all for doing deep dives on complex movies, but sometimes you just get to turn your brain off and watch Ryan Reynolds beat the shit out of a much larger Ryan Reynolds.
I wouldn't watch this movie again, but I'd be a liar if I didn't admit that I got a few solid laughs out of it.
