Most of the time, I don't have much trouble telling you if I enjoyed the movie or not. this is not most times.
Fear No Evil is a 1981 American horror film directed by Frank LaLoggia, and starring Stefan Arngrim, Elizabeth Hoffman, and Kathleen Rowe McAllen. When Lucifer is reincarnated as a teenage boy named Andrew, two archangels in human form are sent to stop him. The problem is, that only Margaret knows she’s actually the angel Mikhail. High-schooler Julie hasn’t yet realized she’s really the angel Gabriel. Even worse, she’s having dirty dreams about a classmate - you guessed it - Andrew! Can the angels get together in time to stop Satan?
Some of my favourite movies I have ever covered on this blog (MAGIC, THE LITTLE GIRL WHO LIVED DOWN THE LANE) are melancholy character studies about loneliness, abuse, and trauma. At first, I though it would be one of those films. This movie opens with a rather over-the-top bloody baptism, then almost immediately jumps to 18 years later when his parent's marriage has completely collapsed. Even when the movie attempts to move on to a more traditional high school slasher setting, there's a sort of cruel edge to it all. This movie never shies away from showing you all the nasty abuse, Even if it is in a strange sort of technicolour style.
Honestly, this would have been much better as a novel. There are far too many characters running around with their own complicated histories, and a novel would be an excellent way to get a peek into each one of these characters' heads and cut down on the confusion. It's not often you'll hear me complain about a movie being too ambitious and trying to fit too much into a Short run time, but that's exactly the case here. It doesn't really work as a horror movie, if anything, you'd have to make this some sort of a miniseries to give it any sort of emotional weight. Instead, we're given a mishandled homo erotic B movie that will never really garner any interest besides as a cult fav of a few specific fans.
I certainly wouldn't watch this movie again, but I will say I would love to see this story in some other format
