EVIL DEAD

This movie is straight up genius. It created a genre, and it's massive impact on horror can't possibly be fully stated here. In case you couldn't tell, it is also my favorite horror franchise of all time.

Unlike Evil Dead II, this movie isn't trying to be a comedy. It uses comedy as a tool to lure you into a false sense of security, but it's main goal here is to scare the pants off of you. Some of the handheld shots do look pretty goofy, and the way everyone talks gives the whole movie this sort of uncanny valley feeling. But instead of feeling uncomfortable, it feels perfectly in place with the movie's tone.

And holy shit I can't believe I haven't mentioned the directing yet. Every shot in this movie feels entirely unique, and the movie takes a lot of higher risks that end up having high rewards. It makes every scene fascinating to watch, and I love how Sam Raimi constantly plays around with the intimacy of the camera. Sometimes it's staring at you from outside the window. Sometimes it's far away and hauling ass towards you. And it will crush anything and everything that gets in it's way. And perhaps scariest of all, sometimes it's directly in front of your face. It's constantly surrounding you and you can never see it until it's too late. It's not something tangible, but it's something ancient and unstoppable. And kinda like ANNIHILATION It's the whole of your environment.

Pretty scary shit huh?

If you can't see this movie as anything more than a cabin in Michigan with some fog machines in it, I really can't help you.

10/10
