So you have managed to escape the farmhouse, fly off from the mall, and now you find yourself in a massive military underground complex. you are safe from the zombies outside, but there is a far worse threat trapped underground with you. something that personally upsets me more than anything Tom Savini could ever cook up, and the main reason this movie is so hard to watch to watch.
what is this horrible thing that serves as the main conflict for this movie? MEN!
And not just men, walking examples of toxic masculinity cranked up to 1000 percent. they constantly make comments about rape, race, threaten to kill other characters for the most minor of inconveniences, and in general are the worst pieces of shit in film history. of course this stems from the fear of losing there power and masculinity, which has definitely been a theme in all of the Romero movies i have talked about so far, but god damn is it hard to watch
anyways now that i have that out of my system, lets talk about this wild ride of a movie. i have enjoyed the first two entries in this series, This is the first time i really loved one of these movies. the dark nightmare scenes are a great way to show the situation has affected everyone, and the constant tension between characters. Romero has always excelled at making realistic and intelligent characters, and this movie is no exception. each one of them stand out, and are dealing with the end of times in vastly different ways. its through these characters that this movie is able to dive into a lot of philosophical questions that make this movie so compelling.
are we morally obliged to help others, or should we simply save our selves? is is possible to reform the zombies from being mindless killing machines? are we doomed to fall into the same societal roles again? what happens now? is there a cure?
and even if you are totally uninterested in diving into this movies themes, there is still a lot here to enjoy. and almost all of what i ma talking about are the mind blowing effects by Tom Savini. besides brain dead, this is by far the most violent movie i have ever seen. even in the smallest of effects, Tom Savini makes every gunshot look and feel real. mix that with the way the actors react to the violence, and you get one of the most effective and disturbing zombie movies of all time.
based on this movie alone, i can see why Romero is considered a master of the horror genre.
